Volleyball Skills
The one thing that all famous volleyball players have in common is that they have mastered the basics. Throughout the history of volleyball, the greats have always been experts in every facet of the game. If you want to succeed in volleyball at any level, there are a few basic skills that you’ll need to know. Once you get them down, you can expand your game and improve your game beyond that. So what are the different parts of the game?
One of the most important fundamentals of the game is the serve. This is how you initially put the ball into play. Without the serve, the game would never begin. There are three basic ways to serve the ball in volleyball. The simplest way to serve the ball is an underhanded lob serve. This involves holding the ball in one hand and then swinging in an upward motion with the other hand to strike the ball. This results in the ball lobbing slowly over the net into play. This method of serving is what beginners usually use because it is the easiest to put in play. The next method is the overhand serve. With this method, the player stands stationery behind the service line. They throw the ball up in the air and hit the ball in an overhand motion towards the net. This results in a faster serve that is more difficult for the other team to return. This serve is also slightly more difficult to keep in play for the server. The third method of serving is the jump serve. Nearly all famous volleyball players use this method of serving. It allows the server to hit the ball even harder than the previous types of serves. The server can get high off the ground and actually hit the ball in a straight line and barely get it over the net. This is the most difficult serve for the server and for the person trying to return it. There are several different volleyball drills that can be practiced to perfect your serve.
Once the ball has been served, the person that the ball goes to on the other team must keep the ball in play. Their job is to pass the ball, which is also called a “dig”. Digging the ball is one of the most important skills that a player can learn. Without this skill the team would never be able to keep the ball in play. This action involves squatting down and bending at the knees. You put both hands together and bump the ball with your forearms.
The next skill is called setting the ball. A different player will then use the tips of their fingers to pop the ball softly up into the air. This skill takes some practice to master. When they set the ball, the next skill comes into play by a different player.
This player will jump high into the air right by the net. They will hit the ball in a fast downward motion over the net and towards the other team. This is called a spike and is the most exciting play in volleyball. If you want to be like the famous volleyball players in the world, you’ll learn all of the above skills and then some.
